AMI General Information

We are pleased to announce the Sheridan School District’s Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) plan for the 2019-20 school year. The plan, which was approved by the Arkansas Department of Education, allows our district to use alternative methods of instruction on days when the district closes school due to exceptional or emergency circumstances.

The department granted our district up to five AMI days to be used this school year, on which students will complete activities and assignments at home rather than making up instructional days in the classroom. This will reduce the need to add instructional days onto the end of the school year.

For the 2019-20 school year, we plan to use any of the make-up days that have been built into our school calendar PRIOR to May 25. However, the Superintendent will make the final decision regarding the use of an AMI day. Those decisions are made in collaboration with stakeholders across the district as well as the communities our district serves.

Anytime school is canceled or delayed due to inclement weather, the district will notify families through the SSD Alert text messaging system as well as the local TV stations. We also will post the announcement to our social media and website, www.SheridanSchools.org. When an AMI day is used during a school cancellation rather than using a traditional makeup day, the announcement will state the missed day will be an AMI day.

Should an AMI day become necessary during the school year, students will complete a packet of instructional materials and assignments to receive credit for the missed day of regular instruction. In order for students to be counted “present” for the day, they must submit their AMI packet to their teacher by the due date. Students will have three days, starting from the first day school is back in session, to complete the packet. If we miss consecutive days, the amount of time to complete the assignment will be adjusted.

AMI packets for each campus may be accessed at the links below. Parents who prefer a printed copy of their child’s packet may request one from their child’s campus.

We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the AMI process closely. Adjustments and improvements may become necessary in the coming years. At this time, we believe the district’s plan is in the best interest of our students in terms of learning, achievement, and safety.
