Parents, here’s a quick video on how to get started with the Canvas Parent app on your phone: https://youtu.be/kEAyb-7rlBk. You will first need to create a Parent Observer account. If you haven’t done this already, you can refer to the video available here: https://youtu.be/o9_8Pcu5QGg. The Observer account lets you track your child’s progress and receive notifications from your teacher in Canvas. Whether you use the app or the website version of Canvas, setting up an Observer account will be helpful to parents of both virtual and onsite students.
SSD Families: As of today, Sept. 3, 2020, the Sheridan School District will provide free school breakfast and lunch meals for all enrolled virtual and onsite students. The funding for the meals will be provided by the USDA. This free school meal program will be effective until Dec. 31, 2020.
SSD Families: We are so happy to have our kids back at school! They are AMAZING! We want you to know that your children are making us proud, and they seem to be adjusting well to the new guidelines. Thank you for all you are doing at home to support them. REMINDERS (Onsite and Virtual) If you haven't already, guardians of returning students should update their child's information in PowerSchool. This will help ensure we have updated phone numbers, home addresses, etc. You should have received a letter with a Snap code in the mail over the summer. The snap code is needed to log in. The link to PowerSchool is https://bit.ly/2QnsPXZ. (Onsite) To help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our schools, we can only allow visitors for official school business. Unfortunately, parents will not be able to come have lunch with their kids this year. We also cannot allow parents to bring in outside food at lunchtime. (Onsite) Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Please do not drop off your students before that time. Under the current health guidelines, we cannot have students congregate in the cafeteria before school like we've done in the past. (Onsite and Virtual) Please complete and return pages 165 - 173 of the Student Handbook. These went home with onsite students this week. Virtual families received a handbook at Chromebook pick up. Thanks again for all you do. We are going to have a great school year if we all work together to #MakeItCount!
SSD Families: We have been closely monitoring the weather forecast and the potential impact of Hurricane Laura in Arkansas. According to the update from the Office of Emergency Management this morning, the estimated time for arrival of the storms is earlier in the afternoon than expected. Due to the possibility of this inclement weather, all SSD campuses will dismiss early today, Aug. 27. Bus riders will dismiss at 12:50 p.m. and car riders will dismiss at 1:00 p.m. Pre-K will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. All extracurricular activities for this afternoon are cancelled. Should we need to cancel onsite learning tomorrow due to flooding or power outages, we will send out a text message to families and post the information to our website and social media platforms as soon as a decision is made. Today, K-2 teachers will send home paper assignments with students for tomorrow in the event we need to pivot to remote learning. Students in grades 3 - 12 will receive assignments in their Canvas accounts. SSD Virtual Families: We are still experiencing technical difficulties with our new Canvas Learning Management System. We sincerely apologize for this rough start to your child’s virtual learning experience. This is not consistent with our standards. Some students are having difficulty logging in and some students are noticing missing or wrong courses in their Canvas accounts. Our IT and curriculum departments are working with Canvas and our student database provider to resolve these issues. While not every student is experiencing these same difficulties, we wanted to send this message out to all of our families in case there are others who have had similar issues. Please know that we are working hard to make sure your child has a positive experience with virtual learning. We are committed to providing your child with a rigorous education as well as any other support services they need. If your child has not been able to complete the work on Canvas today or yesterday, there is no need to worry about him/her being counted absent. Also, there is no need to worry about him/her falling behind. Our teachers are aware of this situation and will be flexible with attendance and allowing your child ample time to catch up on school work. Again, we apologize for this inconvenience and the stress this may have caused. We thank you for your patience as we work through the kinks of our new learning management system. We will update you once we receive more information from Canvas.

Sheridan School District is pleased to announce the theme for the 2020-21 school year: Make It Count! This past year has served as a great reminder that we should make the most out of each day. We must take every opportunity to teach and learn, and we shouldn't take our time for granted. Although COVID-19 has brought about some changes in school and everyday life that we aren't necessarily thrilled with, let's focus on the positive and find joy in whatever we do. Our faculty and staff are grateful for the time we have with our students, and we see each day as another opportunity to make a positive impact on our students' lives! Please help us show support for our students as they begin the school year by sharing your words of encouragement on your social media pages! Use the hashtag #MakeItCount!
The governor officially announced on August 14 that football and volleyball will be able to continue their schedule of competition. However, we will need to meet the Arkansas Department of Health guidelines for large venue events. This means we will have limited seating available for fans at our facilities. No season passes will be sold this year and no AAA passes will be accepted. For football, each participating student (football, cheer, dance, band) will have the opportunity to purchase two tickets each. Tickets may be purchased at the high school office during the week of the game. No tickets will be sold at the gate. Only pre-sold tickets will be accepted. Football games will be live streamed. Each week you will find the link to the live stream on the Sheridan Athletics Web page. For volleyball, tickets will be sold at the gate until capacity is reached. There will be limited seats available in the Yellowjacket Arena. Information for purchasing tickets to AWAY games is not available at this time. ADH Guidelines for Face Coverings at Athletics Events: All attendees are required to wear face coverings except for children under 10 years of age. Due to increased production of respiratory droplets during yelling and cheering, face coverings should remain in place even when attendees are seated and maintaining required physical distancing. Face coverings may be removed to consume food or beverage but should be in place immediately afterwards.

Today the school board recognized SHS AP teachers Susan Coles and Chris Jones (not pictured). Mrs. Coles had the highest number of students who received 3s and 4s on the AP exams last Spring. Mr. Jones’ students had a 100% pass rate for the third consecutive year. Congratulations to these amazing educators and thank you for all you do!
Today the school board recognized Kaleigh Coker, a Class of 2020 graduate who earned the National AP Scholar award, the highest level of recognition given by the College Board. This award is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken during a student’s high school career, as well as score a 4 or higher on at least eight exams. Kaleigh plans to attend Hendrix College this fall as a prospective biochemistry and molecular biology major. When asked about her experience in SHS AP courses, Kaleigh said, “Without the enjoyable challenge of Sheridan's AP courses, my high school experience would not have been nearly as fulfilling and insightful. My teachers are the reason I'm on the path to my passion.”

SSD Families: We understand that many of our families still do not have power in their homes. We will continue to provide lessons to best of our ability; however, these lessons are optional until power has been restored. We do not want this school work to add to your worries. These lessons are intended to provide a sense of normalcy for our students and to serve as a resource for those families who have power and want to continue with school work.
SSD Families: Beginning today, our Grab-&-Go meal service in Sheridan has been moved from SES to SHS. The drive-thru will be in front of the Yellowjacket Arena. For East End, meals can still be picked up at EEM. We have set up Safe Learning Zones at each of our campus parking lots -- with the exception of SMS due to construction -- so that SSD families can park in our parking lots for students to access our school Internet for digital learning. You will not need a password to access our Guest Access WiFi. Remember to practice social distancing. Our facilities will remain closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but you can still call the offices M-F, from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. We are working to set up additional Wifi hotspots throughout our district. We will announce those locations next week.

SSD Families: Thank you to everyone who completed our Technology Survey. The Sheridan School District is finalizing the logistics of providing a more interactive and engaging method to provide distance learning for our students during this extended closure. Additionally, you might have heard that the Arkansas Department of Education has partnered with Arkansas PBS to support school districts with “Arkansas AMI” for grades PreK - 8. While Arkansas PBS will be a great supplemental tool for parents to access for their students, it will not replace the Sheridan School District’s AMI plan. We will send more information about our AMI plan by the end of the week.
SSD Families: REMINDER Even though it is Spring Break, we are still serving Grab-and Go meals for children at the front entrances of Sheridan Elementary School and East End Middle School. Meals can be picked up from 10:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Dear Class of 2020, First off, we want you to know that we love you! The entire #YJNation is proud of your hard work, accomplishments, and perseverance. Like you, we are disappointed with the way your senior year is coming to a close. We recognize that you will be missing out on many memories due to the school closure, and we feel for you! Many of you have asked about how the school closure will affect prom and graduation. At this time, all we know for certain is that these two events will be postponed. As you are probably aware, we receive new information and guidance regarding COVID-19 from our government every day. We will monitor the situation closely and stay in contact with you as we know more. Be assured that no matter what the future holds, we will celebrate you and all that you mean to #YJNation! Sincerely, Superintendent Jerrod Williams

We will provide more information regarding alternative methods of instruction (AMI) to make up for these additional missed days. We'll send that information to you soon. Sheridan Schools is making preparations should distance learning become necessary beyond the ten days. We are currently exploring options to incorporate more online instruction into our AMI plan; however, we realize not all students are able to complete assignments online. We are surveying all our parents to determine which households need access to internet and/or an electronic device such as a computer, smartphone, tablet or Chromebook. Parents with more than one child enrolled in Sheridan Schools should complete a survey for EACH STUDENT. Please tap on the link to take the short survey by the end of the day on March 20. After that date, we will begin calling families who did not respond to the electronic survey. It is important we understand the needs of every student. http://bit.ly/2QsYfwi
SSD Families: We hope you and your family are doing well. We want you to know that we miss all of our students and will do what we can to meet the needs of our students while we are out of school. Our teachers have already started making calls to check on students and to see if anyone needs help with AMI packets. We understand that not everyone has access to a printer to print off AMI packets. If needed, you can call your school office to arrange a time to pick up your packets or have them mailed to you. Also, please call your school office if your child needs access to the school counselor and/or mental health services.
