In 1913, Sheridan students moved into a new two-story brick building (still in use today as the district’s administration building) constructed just south of the old frame school (near where Sheridan Middle School currently sits). A 1911 warranty deed from J.L. Butler, president of the Sheridan school board, and T.C. Rushing, secretary of the board, shows that one acre of land for this facility was purchased from W.D. McDonald for $18.50. There is also a mortgage record dated 1912 to the State Bank of Chicago for $12,000 to “build and equip a new building, at six percent per annum, payable semi-annually.” The original building was described in a 1917 handbook as containing, “seven rooms and a chapel suitable for classwork, and is well equipped with desks and books.”

As the Yellowjackets prepare for another exciting football season, it seems fitting to tip our hats to Sheridan's first football team, a rugged bunch pictured here in 1924. Notice that helmets at that time were made of leather and none had facemasks. Those in the picture appear loose-fitting and seem to also lack chin-straps.

We hope to see you there! Go Jackets!

This accomplishment means that all schools in the Sheridan School District have achieved this important certification — directly supporting Priority Area 1 of the district’s recently completed strategic plan: prioritizing the safety and well-being of students and staff by strengthening security, emergency preparedness, and school culture.

Throwback Thursday
We’re kicking off a new tradition – every Thursday this school year, we plan to share a piece of Sheridan School District history along with some vintage photos or art from years gone by.
In 1873, the Arkansas Gazette described Sheridan as “blessed with quiet law-abiding citizens with a highly cultivated state of morals.” The article indicated that locals were eager to build “a fine male and female high school,” which was completed around 1879 on the northeast corner of Oak and Bell Streets.
Not long after, the school moved to the site of today’s Sheridan Middle School. The first building there had just two rooms, but by 1884 it was replaced with a four-room frame schoolhouse – marking the humble beginnings of today’s Sheridan School District.
