Sheridan High School science teacher Karen Burnett was named last night as the 2024-25 Sheridan School District Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Burnett was presented the award by Sheridan Superintendent Chad Pitts at the May meeting of the Sheridan Board of Education.
Teachers of the Year from all eight Sheridan School District campuses were honored last night. Shown with Mr. Pitts (left to right) are: Lynn Summit (Alternative Learning Academy), Karen Burnett (Sheridan High School), Tina Potter (East End Intermediate School), Rachael Bellomy (Sheridan Middle School), Ashley Jacobs (East End Middle School), Sara Allen (Sheridan Elementary School), and Angie Key (Sheridan Intermediate School). Not pictured is Abby Stoops (East End Elementary School).
Mrs. Burnett was once an environmental scientist who volunteered her time to teach science to younger students. That eventually led her to pursue alternative certification and transition into a full-time teaching role. Throughout her tenure, Mrs. Burnett has taught a wide range of science classes and currently leads courses in Advanced Biology, AP Environmental Science, and AP Biology. Her dedication to academic excellence is evident in her outstanding AP test results, which often far exceed state averages. Her AP Biology pass rate last year was 85% — the highest pass rate in the district. In her 20 years of education experience, Mrs. Burnett has been named as a campus Teacher of the Year four times. Congratulations to Karen Burnett!

Thank you to EVERYONE who made Teacher Appreciation a week to remember for our teachers at The Academy!
