Summer Williams, Gifted and Talented/AP Coordinator with the Sheridan School District, wrote an article for the March issue of Instructional Leader entitled, "Student Choice Benefits All Learners." "The typical school setting is designed with rigidity in mind: the bells ring at designated times, the curriculum pacing guides are outlined in detail, and the daily lesson is scripted minute by minute. Students often find their voices and input mean little throughout their school day, because the adults have already planned everything. However, research tells us that the adolescent brain craves the reward that is felt when an independent choice is made and that engagement soars when students feel like they have a say in their learning ... The concept of student choice is not new. In fact, think back to the most memorable activities and assignments from your own school days. I imagine most of them allowed you to have some say in the way you approached that learning." Read more: https://5il.co/39jc0

The Sheridan School District is proud to announce that East End Middle School has been recognized by the University of Arkansas' Office for Education Policy (OEP) for demonstrating exceptional academic growth in the 2024 ATLAS assessment. The school received several prestigious awards, including: • High Overall Growth (Statewide) • High Overall Growth (Central Region) • High ELA Growth (Central Region) EEM is in the top 20 of middle schools in Arkansas in overall growth and top five middle schools in Central Arkansas for overall growth. The OEP’s annual report, the Outstanding Educational Performance Awards, celebrates schools that show the greatest improvement in student academic performance. The awards are based on growth scores calculated by the Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education, which measure how much students improved compared to others with similar prior achievements. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers and staff,” said Dr. Heather Williams, principal at EEM. “It highlights our continuous commitment to improvement, and I’m incredibly proud of our team and the progress we’ve made together.” “East End Middle School is a great example of what is possible when we focus on student growth and provide a supportive, challenging environment,” said Chad Pitts, superintendent of the Sheridan School District. “These awards highlight the commitment our educators have made to helping all of our students reach new heights. We are thrilled to see East End Middle School’s continued success and look forward to even more accomplishments in the future.”
