The Sheridan High School JROTC participated in Wreaths Across America at the Little Rock National Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 18. Twenty-two cadets took part in the event. They helped unload and stage more than 18,000 wreaths that were placed at the headstones of veterans who are buried at the Little Rock National Cemetery. The Yellowjacket Battalion also provided the Color Guard and presented the colors for the event. The mission for Wreaths Across America is "Remember, Honor and Teach."

Sheridan School District GT facilitators Sherri DeSoto and Angie Walters were recently awarded the annual Arkansas Securities Department Grant, which is given to foster economic literacy in schools across the state. The grant, totaling more than $4,500, will be used to purchase Chromebook accessories and finance-focused literature that supports 5th grade GT classes' focus on economics and entrepreneurship. Grant monies will also fund teams' participation in the Stock Market Game.

The Sheridan girls' and boys' high school teams each took big wins over Monticello last night at Yellowjacket Arena. The SHS girls won by 28, and the boys won by 15. Both teams will be in action again on Friday, Dec. 17 at Episcopal. The first game starts at 6 p.m.




Two Sheridan High School students won awards for bowling at the state Special Olympics competition at Professor Bowl in Little Rock on Thursday. Junior Mandi Trickel (left) placed third and was awarded a bronze medal. Sophomore Leah D’Mitruchina placed second and was awarded a silver medal.

The Sheridan JROTC will provide the Color Guard and participate in the "Wreaths Across America" wreath laying ceremony at the Little Rock National Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 18. Approximately 16,000 wreaths will be placed on headstones of veterans. The event begins at 11 a.m.

Congratulations to Sheridan Intermediate School students who participated in the school's spelling bee yesterday. Winners were: 1st place, Alexander Russ, 3rd grade; 2nd place, Lorelai Keen, 3rd grade; 3rd place, Megan Rogers, 4th grade. These students and the next nine who placed will move forward to the Grant County Spelling Bee which will be held at the Sheridan High School Arena on Jan. 28.

Sheridan Intermediate School's GT students earned the 2nd runner-up trophy at the Regional Quiz Bowl Tournament held Dec. 2 at the Arkansas River Educational Service Cooperative. The students are coached by Mrs. Sherri DeSoto, Gifted and Talented facilitator at SES and SIS.
The Sheridan band had a successful Saturday in Crossett at the ASBOA All-Region Junior High Concert Band auditions. These students won chairs in the All-Region Concert Band. (See attached graphic that includes the student's school and grade.) They will travel to Monticello this weekend to work with a guest clinician and students from other area schools. Concerts will begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the Drew Central Auditorium in Monticello. Concerts are free and open to the public.

The Sheridan High School, Sheridan Middle School and East End Middle School choirs will each have public performances in early December. On Thursday, Dec. 2, the combined SMS and EEM choirs will perform their concert in the EEM cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday, Dec. 9, the SHS choir concert will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.

The Sheridan High School Student Council and National Honor Society would like to thank each person who donated cans to SHS's annual canned food drive. The final count for SHS was 3,935 cans, with Ms. Vaccaro's class finishing as the first place winner with 1,044 cans. Mrs. Williams' class was the second place winner with 638 cans, and Mrs. Rich's class finished in third place with 378 cans. This year’s canned food drive was a competition between Sheridan and White Hall High Schools. White Hall collected approximately 1,000 cans. All donations were given to Kathy’s Closet Food Pantry as well as three local church food banks.




Three Sheridan students were among the 14 statewide whose ornament designs were selected to hang on the Arkansas Christmas tree at President’s Park in Washington D.C. this year. Sheridan students with winning designs were Ashton Mangrum (10th grade), Fallyn Mangrum (ninth grade), and Keeley Wilkerson (12th grade).

The Sheridan High School Quiz Bowl team competed at the Arkansas River Quiz Bowl Tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 17. They won three out of four games and finished in second place.

The SHS girls and boys teams each took convincing wins over the Malvern Leopards last night in the Lakeside Jamboree. Both senior high Yellowjacket varsity teams will play in the Jamboree again tomorrow against Texarkana (Tex.).
The Sheridan cheerleading squads had success on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Bank of OZK Invitational. The SHS varsity finished third overall, the senior high JV squad was first in their division, and SJHS took second place in their competition. Congratulations, girls!
